An artistic tribute to the Smiths

Artists have payed homage to the Smiths with a new exhibition which showcases some of arts best tributes to the classic Manchester band at the Holden Gallery in Manchester.

A tap dancing performance to ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’ sits alongside a video piece foretelling the death of Diana using the lyrics from ‘the Queen is Dead’.  As well as this a “bootleg booth” shows early clips of the band.

The Today programme went to visit and came back with a great piece, which you can listen to again here…. According to the blurb on their website…

The selected works in The Gospel According To.. (part 1) demonstrates how artists have employed the bands’ cult legacy to re-interpret the music and the humour/tragedy themes often employed in The Smiths songs.

This all sounds fascinating and well worth a visit if you’re in town.  The Gospel According To… runs until 4th May.
